Chantenay is a traditional, French carrot that was grown in the 18th century in the eponymous region Chantenay. In the 1950s it experienced a brief renaissance as a summer carrot in European gardens, after which it was forgotten. The open-pollinated Chantenay carrots have several properties that make them ideal for home garden vegetable patches: They are highly resistant to diseases and pests, and with an appropriate cover they can withstand longer periods of cold weather and frost. In addition, they can be eaten unpeeled.
The Chantenay carrot forms rather short, conical roots with rounded tips.
